Understand your firearm category and purpose →
This is an introduction for adults considering their first Category A or B firearm. It covers the lawful acquisition process. Pistol and other specialised categories have additional requirements; use the relevant Tasmania Police guidance.
Requirements can change. Confirm the current rules with Firearms Services before applying or purchasing.
1. Start with the activity and your licence
Check that your current licence covers your intended activity and the category of firearm. A club or licensed dealer can help you understand the equipment used for your chosen discipline, before you spend money.
Check the licence categories ↗2. Arrange compliant storage first
Read the requirements that apply to your category, quantities and premises. Plan for the firearm, ammunition and authorised access. Ask Firearms Services about anything unclear before buying or installing a safe.
Read the storage and safekeeping requirements ↗3. Speak with a licensed firearms dealer
Discuss your intended activity, licence and budget, including storage and other ongoing costs. Tasmania Police states that firearm sales must be conducted through a licensed dealer, including second-hand sales.
Check the rules for firearm sales ↗4. Apply for a permit to acquire
A licence and a permit to acquire are different. Lodge the current permit application and fee at Service Tasmania. Firearms Services assesses your category, suitability, reason and need, and ability to meet storage and safety requirements.
Apply for a permit to acquire ↗5. Allow time for assessment
For a first firearm, Tasmania Police specifies a minimum 28-day waiting period before a permit can be approved. This is a minimum, not a promised collection date. Wait for approval and follow the permit conditions.
Check waiting periods and approval requirements ↗6. Complete the transfer and plan the journey home
Arrange collection with your dealer once the required approvals are in place. Ask them to explain the transfer and registration paperwork, and check the details before leaving. Read the transport requirements and have your compliant storage ready at home.
Check transport and storage before collection ↗Common questions
