Firearm category · Category A
Which firearms are included?
- Air rifles.
- Rimfire rifles that are not self-loading.
- Shotguns other than pump-action, lever-action or self-loading types.
- Shotgun and rimfire rifle combinations.
Why might you need it?
Examples include an over-and-under shotgun for clay shooting or a bolt-action rimfire rifle for target shooting or permitted hunting. The activity must be covered by your genuine-reason endorsement.
What do you need to apply?
Choose the purpose that matches your intended activity and gather its evidence, such as approved club membership or landholder permission. Category A may be sought for any genuine reason recognised by the Act, subject to the relevant licensing requirements.
What should you check?
Rimfire alone does not mean Category A: self-loading rimfire rifles fall within C or D. Air pistols fall within H. For an unfamiliar model, check the Police classification guidance as well as this broad description.
