Firearm category · Category B

Which firearms are included?

  • Muzzle-loading firearms.
  • Centrefire rifles that are not self-loading.
  • Lever-action shotguns with a magazine capacity of no more than five rounds.
  • Shotgun and centrefire rifle combinations.

Why might you need it?

A centrefire target discipline, permitted hunting or a primary-production need may call for Category B. The firearm and the activity must both fit the authority on your licence.

What do you need to apply?

Provide the evidence for your genuine reason and explain the need for Category B. Police guidance asks why Category A would not be sufficient. This is an assessment of your circumstances, not an automatic next level after Category A.

What should you check?

Lever-action shotguns moved out of Category A from 1 December 2024. Those within the five-round magazine limit are B; those exceeding five-round capacity are D. Older category summaries may omit this change.
