Firearm category · Category H

Which firearms are included?

Category H covers pistols, including revolvers and air pistols. Sporting eligibility also depends on calibre, barrel length and magazine capacity, with specific approvals available for certain prescribed events.

Why might you need it?

Approved pistol sport, qualifying employment or security work, and collecting have different pathways. You must demonstrate the need for H in connection with the approved reason.

Applying for pistol sport

Join an approved pistol shooting club, obtain the required membership evidence and information-exchange consent, and follow the Police application and training process. A first sporting-pistol acquisition requires at least six months holding H1 and club membership for that same period.

What continues after approval?

Sporting licence holders have participation and acquisition conditions. Employment and collection licences have their own restrictions. Read the conditions for your purpose before acquiring a pistol.
